2006 City Harvest Bid Against Hunger

Photography by Diana DeLucia

On Tuesday night, October 24th, the Metropolitan Pavilion on 18th Street was transformed into a gigantic tasting menu featuring the crème de la crème of New York’s restaurant world. City Harvest, New York City’s only food rescue organization, presented its 12th annual Bid Against Hunger, an event that was sold out in spite of its pricey admission of $250, or $1000 for VIP’s. But if the venue was larger they would have sold twice the number of tickets, for the room was filled with dishes from over 50 of the city’s best restaurants. Bidding on some fantastic prizes in the live and silent auctions resulted in some very high bids, including The Ultimate New York package, which consisted of dinner to New York’s most famous and prestigious restaurants, which sold for a whopping $26,000! Sponsors were The Institute of Culinary Education, WNBC-4, Union Square Hospitality Group, Peerless Importers, Inc., and New York Magazine.

Founded in 1982, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding New York City’s hungry men, women and children. This year, City Harvest will collect 21 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to more than 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of 15 trucks and volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal.
