Citymeals on Wheels- A Celebration of the American Farmer

Photography by Diana DeLucia

A heavy rain greeted 1,200 hungry socialites and the hordes of cooks and chefs who manned the 66 tasting stations that were set up all around Rockefeller Center’s esplanades on June 11th for the 2007 Citymeals-on-Wheels Chefs’ Tribute. But this year, the event coordinators were ready, having invested in bigger and better tent technology than in years past, thus keeping the aforementioned hosts and their privileged guests toasty and dry. But it was the farmers at the event who were most likely the least affected, as they tend to see rain in a completely different light from the rest of us.

When the skies cleared, the exquisite smells of tiny examples of sustainable cuisine took center stage, prepared by chefs from all over the country who were particularly known not only for their sourcing of local ingredients, but for their longstanding support of farmers and freshly grown food. The list of chefs this year was impressive, and included farmer-friendly chefs from a wide variety of regions across the country such as Alice Waters, Charlie Trotter, Dan Barber, Claudia Fleming, Michel Nischan, Bill Telepan, Joshua Hollinger, Jonathan Waxman, Charlie Palmer, Alfred Portale, and many, many others.
